Last Saturday, while out on a bike ride through Son Tra Mountains in Da Nang, Vietnam, I came across a group of volunteers picking up trash.
Curious, I pulled over and asked if I could join. They handed me gloves, a trash bag, and a big smile. They also told me that if I collected 5 kgs of waste, I would be gifted a plant 🪴
Clean Up Son Tra is a fully volunteer-powered initiative and their mission is to make Da Nang green again. They start brright and early at 6AM, cleaning up scenic routes and helping protect local wildlife - especially the Red-shanked douc, a critically endangered primate native to the region.
It was such a grounding experience to give back in a simple, hands-on way. In the same spirit, any donations made to this post will go directly toward a free meals program in Hue, where a local restaurant provides meals to those in need.
